ITV confirms fourth series and Christmas special of Downton Abbey

ITV have this afternoon confirmed they have commissioned a fourth series of hit period drama ‘Downton Abbey’.

The fourth series will be made up of eight new episodes as well as a Christmas special which will air over the 2013 festive period.

Laura Mackie, Director of Drama at ITV, said: "We're thrilled to welcome back a drama series that has become a much anticipated part of all our lives every autumn and achieved success around the globe.

“Creator, writer and executive producer Julian Fellowes and the production team, led by Gareth and the producer Liz Trubridge, never rest on their laurels and have exciting plans for the fourth series."

Meanwhile the station has also confirmed that a two hour Christmas special will be broadcast in the prime time Christmas day slot of 9pm next month.
