It's no laughing matter, as RTÉ axes The Panel

For nine seasons it was the hottest debate on Irish TV.

But I can exclusively reveal The Panel has been axed by RTÉ.

Highlights of last season included a man who lived with wolves, and host Craig Doyle (right) falling off his chair.

The ratings weren't bad either but the show will not be part of RTÉ's autumn schedule launch later this summer.

This was confirmed by an RTÉ spokeswoman, who told me: "I can confirm that The Panel won't be returning to our screens this autumn. The show has enjoyed nine seasons, the first six on RTÉ Two and the three most recent on RTÉ One.

"We'd like to thank The Panel team who delivered many hours of enjoyable and entertaining programming to us over those seasons.

"We look forward to working with them again in the future. While very successful during its run, we believe that it is time to bring something new to the audience this autumn. I can confirm that Craig Doyle will be back in the autumn on RTÉ television."
