RTE journalist Martina Fitzgerald said she was “shell-shocked” last night after learning that she had been appointed as the station's political correspondent.
From Kilskyre in Co Meath, she replaces David McCullagh who joined the Prime Team last month following Pat Kenny's departure to Newstalk.
She is the first female political correspondent in six years.
The last female to take up the role at RTE was Una Claffey between 2000 and 2007.
“I'm over the moon and shell-shocked right now,” Martina told the Herald.
“I have such big shoes to fill, David McCullagh was excellent. I have a hard act to follow, but I'm looking forward to the challenge and working within RTE's political team.”
Ms Fitzgerald has worked as a journalist in RTE for the last 14 years on radio and television news programmes.
