how the hell did this nutter rise to the top?

The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler (BBC Two) was written and directed by Laurence Rees, who had already given us the superb 1997 series, The Nazis: A Warning from History, and its 2005 follow-up, Auschwitz: The Nazis and the Final Solution.

The new series didn't add anything new and it was somewhat cheesy in some of its visual effects, but advanced technology transformed the historical footage, much of it in colour, into a startlingly vivid and unsettling account of the charismatic Austrian and his rule.

How an insignificant little nobody ever led a nation into murderous madness is still beyond comprehension, but we can never be reminded of the fact too often.
