Gruelling drama is year's best show

John Boland

Happy Valley (BBC1), which ends its six-episode run next week, has got tougher and more gruelling but also more domestically involving as it has proceeded.

It looks set to be one of the year's outstanding dramas, with a standout performance from Sarah Lancashire (right) as the west Yorkshire policewoman confronting current and past horrors.

Less rooted in a recognisable reality, Fargo (Channel 4) has been getting odder by the week.

The latest episode culminated in shoals of fish crash-landing from the sky above Minnesota. Apocalypse now? Or merely a steal from Magnolia?

Either way, the series still exerts its blackly comic grip.
