Cloverfield (2008)

J.J. Abrams's gripping and ingenious action thriller Cloverfield was made in and around New York for a modest $25 million, and tells the story of a Godzilla-style monster attack on New York City from the perspective of a terrified man with a video camera.

A group of friends are enjoying a party when they hear some alarming shudders outside. They think it's an earthquake, but it's actually a very angry sea monster, who plunges up Broadway spreading havoc and flooring skyscrapers with its tail.

When the friends manage to escape into the subway, they face further attacks from terrifying undersea lice that have fallen from the monster as they endeavour to reach Central Park and escape in a military airlift. Starring Odette Yustman, Jessica Luca, Michael Stahl-David and Lizzy Caplan.

Gregory Peck stars in this daft but enjoyable Stanley Donen thriller as Professor David Pollock, a specialist in Arabic hieroglyphics at Oxford University who becomes involved in a murky international assassination plot. Starring Sophia Loren.

Iron Man (2008)

Robert Downey makes a good action hero in this blockbuster based on a Marvel comic character. Downey is Tony Stark, a weapons inventor who lives a playboy lifestyle until he sees first hand the carnage his products cause and decides to devote his talents to fighting crime. With Gwyneth Paltrow.

City Slickers (1991)

Jack Palance won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance as leathery cowboy Curly in this smart and breezy 90s comedy. Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby and Daniel Stern play three city friends who bite off more than they can chew when they holiday at a New Mexico ranch. With Patricia Wettig.

Man on Fire (2004)

Denzel Washington stars as a burnt out CIA man who's hired as a bodyguard by the wealthy parents of a nine-year-old girl after a wave of kidnappings sweep Mexico City. He becomes attached to the child, and when she in turn is abducted he vows to find and save her. With Dakota Fanning.

Blade Runner (1982)

Ridley Scott's stylish science-fiction thriller stars Harrison Ford as a futuristic Los Angeles cop who is persuaded to come out of retirement to hunt down a group of androids who are looking to kill their wealthy and reclusive creator. Also starring Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, Edward James Olmos and M. Emmet Walsh.
