Film Highlights Wednesday

Mama (2013)

HHH

Sky Movies Premiere, 8.00pm

Although it's directed by Andres Muschietti, 'Mama' is produced by Guillermo del Toro and the horror maestro's thumbprints are all over it.

No blood, guts and cheap thrills here: 'Mama' is all muted palates and shadowy compositions, and has the look and feel of a contemporary fairytale. It also has Jessica Chastain, who would make virtually anything watchable.

Two small girls have been missing for five years when they're found, starving and feral, in a remote abandoned cabin. When their Uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his girlfriend Annabel (Chastain) take them in, they face an uphill battle to rehabilitate the girls, but have bigger things to worry about when they realise that the children have brought a mysterious and malevolent presence into their house with them.

The War of the Worlds (1953)

HHHH

Channel 4, 12.30pm

Byron Haskin's screen adaptation of HG Wells' classic novel shifts the action from London to California, where the locals are bemused when a meteor crashes to Earth, then watch in horror as the top screws off and a bunch of murderous aliens jump out. With Gene Barry and Lewis Martin.

Case 39 (2009)

HH

RTE One, 9.35pm

Renee Zellweger heads the cast of this messy thriller, playing a social worker called Emily who thinks she's done her good deed for the day when she removes a 10-year-old girl from her parents, who believe she's possessed. But on reflection, Emily begins to suspect they may have a point.

Stay Alive (2006)

HH

UTV, 12.05pm

Nasty little horror film inspired by the 'Saw' franchise. When two of their friends die in violent circumstances after playing a lurid video game, a group of teenagers dare to play on but soon become locked in battle with an invisible and deadly enemy. With Frankie Muniz and Samaire Armstrong.

Casanova (2005)

HHH

BBC1, 11.35pm

Heath Ledger stars in this sumptuous Lasse Hallstrom period drama as Giacomo Casanova, the legendary 18th-century Venetian playboy who is busily pursuing various romantic interests when he falls foul of the Church and is put on trial for heresy. With Sienna Miller and Jeremy Irons.

Micmacs (2009)

HHH

RTE Two, 11.55pm

Jean-Pierre Jeunet's fanciful drama stars Dany Boon as Bazil, a video store clerk who gets a bullet lodged in his skull in a horrible accident and sets out to avenge himself on the arms manufacturers that have ruined his life, with the help of some colourful friends. Dominique Pinon co-stars.
