Film Highlights Tuesday
Black Gold (2011)
Sky Movies Drama, 11.30pm
Jean-Jacques Annaud's sweeping historical adventure is set in the Gulf of Arabia in the 1930s and based on a novel by Hans Ruesch.
'Black Gold' uses the simmering rivalries between two imaginary desert tribes to dramatise the ructions caused by the discovery of vast reserves of oil in the region between the wars. Antionio Banderas is the Omar Sharif of the piece, a dashing desert Emir called Nesib who believes in progress and welcomes the Texan oilmen who come sniffing around his kingdom looking to make their fortunes.
Nesib's sworn enemy is Sultan Amar (Mark Strong), a noble but very conservative tribal leader who believes the westerners and their obsession with money will destroy the cherished Arab ways. Freida Pinto, Tahar Rahim and Riz Ahmed co-star.
Film Four, 2.45pm
Stirring African adventure from John Ford starring Clark Gable as macho big game hunter Victor Marswell, whose search for lions and so forth is rudely interrupted by the arrival of two women (Ana Gardner and Grace Kelly) who vie for his attention. Poor chap. With Donald Sinden and Denis O'Dea.
Last Holiday (2006)
Sky Movies Comedy, 4.35pm
Queen Latifah is at her charming best in this likeable little comedy about an over-cautious single woman who works hard in a New Orleans department store and saves every penny she earns. But when she finds out she only has weeks to live she heads for Europe for the holiday of a lifetime.
Sky Movies Action, 8.00pm
Noisy action blockbuster starring Liam Neeson and Taylor Kitsch as US officers who are taking part in an international naval exercise off the coast of Hawaii when alien warships come crashing out of the sky intent on colonising the planet. Peter Berg directs, and Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker and Alexander Skarsgard co-star.

Anthony Minghella's Oscar-winning epic is set during the American Civil War and stars Jude Law as a wounded Confederate soldier who decides to desert and leaves the field of battle to begin a long walk home to North Carolina. With Nicole Kidman.
The American (2010)
Film Four, 9.00pm
Anton Corbijn's moody drama stars George Clooney as Jack, a hitman who goes to ground in a remote Italian village after barely escaping with his life from an assassination attempt in Sweden. And when he gets bored and goes to a nearby brothel, he falls in love with a prostitute called Clara.
