Film Highlights Saturday

Easy A (2010)

HHH

Film4, 9.00pm

Emma Stone is a talented and charismatic young actress, and she's at her best in this teen comedy very loosely based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel 'The Scarlet Letter'.

Stone is Olive Penderghast, a senior year student at a California high school who has been a pretty anonymous pupil until an overheard misunderstanding turns her into a social pariah.

Olive has never even had a boyfriend, but when she grows tired of admitting she's spent yet another weekend alone she tells her best friend Rhiannon (Aly Michalka) that she slept with a college boy. She's overheard by the school gossip, and next thing you know she's being castigated as a slut. Olive rather likes the attention at first, but then things get out of hand. Thomas Haden Church and Amanda Bynes co-star. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947)

HHHH

TG4, 4.05pm

Charming musical comedy loosely based on a short story by James Thurber. Danny Kaye is Walter Mitty, a meek young man from New Jersey who escapes his mother's bullying by retreating into a fantasy world in which he's always a dashing hero.

Megamind (1981)

HHH

RTE One, 6.35pm

In this amusing DreamWorks animation, an extraterrestrial villain with grandiose tendencies slowly realises that life is no fun when you get your way all the time after he accidently kills his arch rival. With the voices of Will Ferrell and Tina Fey.

Robin Hood (2010)

HHH

Channel 4, 9.00pm

Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott bring us a typically gritty take on the much loved English legend that's rather slow in parts but boasts a great cast and a spectacular climactic battle scene. Crowe is Robin, Cate Blanchett is Maid Marian and Mark Strong and William Hurt are the baddies.

Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995)

HHH

BBC3, 9.00pm

In this third instalment in the action franchise, a criminal gang lay siege to New York City and John McClane and a reluctant Harlem shopkeeper become involved in a race to save a boobytrapped school. Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson star, and Jeremy Irons is a most entertaining baddie.

Land of the Lost (2009)

HHH

RTE Two, 10.00pm

Mildly amusing comic adventure starring Will Ferrell as Dr Rick Marshall, a bumbling but unshakably confident scientist who's sucked into a space-time vortex and deposited in a dangerous world teeming with dinosaurs and other terrifying creatures. With Anna Friel and Danny McBride.
