VOICE of Ireland frontman Eoghan McDermott is to host the new RTE show which will replace The Panel.

The best best pal of One Direction singer Niall Horan has landed his biggest gig on Irish TV yet, fronting topical quiz Next Week's News.

Having toiled in the Engine Room of The Voice of Ireland, Eoghan has been promoted to the bridge as quiz master of the new series in which Irish stars predict what will make the headlines.

"He screen-tested and was really funny. He's an absolute natural for the role as host," said a show insider.

Neil Delamere and other well-known comedians are due to take part in the new series replacing The Panel which ran for nine series on RTE.

Described as like "nothing else on Irish TV at the moment", the quiz is tipped for a Monday or Tuesday night slot on RTE2 TV throughout next year.

Viewers will get to see the new show even sooner with an end of year review special planned for New Year's Eve.

There had been some surprise at RTE's decision to hire Eoghan for the top job as he was not involved in a pilot for Next Week's News.

Eoghan is expected to host the first series of Next Week's News in 2014 at the same time as he reports from the Engine Room of The Voice of Ireland.
