Jack and Vera were one of the street's most iconic couples.

CORONATION Street legend Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth, has died at the age of 71.

Tarmey first appeared as the legendary character in 1979, before leaving the soap in 2010 due to declining health.

His character Jack’s death was aired on November 8th 2010, almost 2 years to the day before the actor himself passed away.

A spokesperson for the soap said Tarmey died this morning in Tenerife. They added that the cast and crew on the show are devastated.

Tarmey’s on screen partnership with wife Vera, played by Elizabeth Dawn, made the couple fan favourites on the long running soap.

Dawn left the street in 2008 for health reasons – however she briefly returned to appear in the episode in which Jack died.

Tarmey is survived by his wife Alma, son Carl and daughter Sara.
