Writer/director Stephen Poliakoff is not without his critics, but the BBC certainly seems to love him, because on Saturday it devoted an entire evening to his work.
This new drama is actually the companion to last week's BBC1 drama starring Michael Gambon, Joe's Palace.
This week Joe, the young caretaker, welcomes an elderly lady called Mary (Maggie Smith) to the vacant mansion he minds and finds that for her it is filled with memories, and not all of them happy.
Back in the late 1950s, Mary, then a brilliant young writer and critic, attended many glamorous soirées here and, as she wanders the house with Joe, she relives them.
