Capturing a hero who sought truth about war

John Boland

Imagine... McCullin (BBC One) was a superb 90-minute profile of the great English photojournalist Don McCullin, who has spent most of his professional life filming atrocities that don't bear thinking about but that would be airbrushed out of history if such brave people hadn't recorded them.

A self-confessed "war junkie" in his younger years, he has covered almost every major and minor world combat, from Vietnam and Cambodia to Cyprus, Northern Ireland and Lebanon and he adheres to the belief that "photography is the truth if it's being done by a truthful person".

The film's images, whether unbearably poignant or simply terrifying, provided eloquent testimony both to that and to their creator's heroism.
