AMERICAN Idol bosses won’t be able to afford Mariah Carey’s judging fee, husband Nick Cannon has claimed.

The ‘hero’ singer has been the front runner to join the judging panel after confirmation last week that both Jennifer Lopez and Stephen Tyler are to leave the struggling talent show.

Speaking to TMZ Cannon said "I don't know if they can afford Mariah Carey. That's a lot of money. If they gave J-Lo $20 million, they might have to double that. You never know, it's one of those things, she's got an album coming out so there's promotional stuff she has to deal with”.

American Idol producers are rumoured to be considering a complete change of panel, meaning last remaining judge Randy Jackson may not retain his seat.

Over the weekend superstar Aretha Franklin threw her name into contention after saying she would consider joining the show.

Jennifer Lopez left the judging panel after salary negotiations stalled – she was rumored to be looking to increase her $15m paycheck by $2m, to make her the highest paid TV talent show judge, ahead of X Factor USA’s Britney Spears.

American Idol has dominated US TV screens for nearly a decade however struggled during its last series.
