Bring back Jedward... RTE suffers viewer slump for Eurovision semi

THEIR quiffs and questionable dance moves may be forgotten by some.
But RTE bosses are missing pop twins Jedward after it was revealed that the TV audience for the first Eurovision semi-final on Tuesday night suffered a drop of 17pc compared to last year.
Reeling around a fountain in golden suits, John and Edward Grimes, performing 2012 Irish entry Waterline from Azerbaijan, reeled in some 468,000 viewers last year.
However on Tuesday night, Irish entry Ryan Dolan could only attract 386,700 adults, a drop of 17pc from 2012, when he performed in the semi-finals in Malmo, Sweden.
“What RTE are suffering is the loss of the Jedward effect. Coming from X Factor, John and Edward always brought a huge audience to Eurovision. They might have come 19th in the final Contest last year but Jedward were a huge draw,” said one media observer.
When first contacted, RTE disputed the figures, but two hours later confirmed they were correct before offering no further comment.
Having finished in the final ten in the first semi-final, Ryan Dolan will now perform Irish entry 'Only Love Survives' in the Grand Final tomorrow.
However RTE is unlikely to suffer any drop in revenue as the TV spots for the Saturday final are already sold.
