With the Love/Hate cat trending online (even getting his own Twitter account) we take a look at the top 5 most memorable animal deaths on the small and big screens.

1. Love/Hate cat

The cat, (Twitter account here) trended online after it was shot with a machine gun, wielded by a child- kicking off the third season in style. The producers ensured to include an addendum during the show's credits to reassure viewers that the cat was not, in fact, harmed during the filming.

2. Bambi's Mother

Could this be the most devastating of all Disney deaths?

Honourable mentions to other Disney deaths include Mufasa's death and Nemo's mother and 399 brothers and sisters.

3. My Dog Skip - final scene

Skip's death in the film My Dog Skip was a peaceful affair which happened during the final scene, narrated by the main character. After following the story of boy and his dog, even this quiet death was wildly upsetting.

(An honourable mention has to go here for the dog in Marley & Me- spoiler alert!)

4. Hazel from Watership Down.

Among multiple animal deaths from animated TV series Watership Down was Hazel the rabbit, whose death had some not-so-vaguely religious undertones when she was asked to join "the Lord" because she was "tired".

5. Eddie from Frasier

While his death was not actually on the show, many Frasier fans were distraught upon the death of the dog who had played Eddie for many years. His real name was Moose and he died of natural causes at fifteen and a half years old.

Here's one of the great scenes by Eddie, a scene through the eyes (and ears!) of the little dog.

Honourable Mention

An honourable mention has to go to Ellie's death scene in Up. While Ellie was human, not animal, this sequence might just be the most emotionally-destroying seven minutes of animation ever to air.
