1 Our disposable culture comes under scrutiny in five new short operas by Brian Irvine (left) and John McIlduff entitled Things We Throw Away, presented by Wide Open Opera (wideopenopera.ie). Four people will perform live in various Dublin city venues today, culminating in a performance of all five operas at 7pm in Dame Court.

2 Liv O'Donoghue, a new name on the dance scene, is marking her arrival with a bang next week, with a double bill of her work in the Project Arts Centre (projectartscentre.ie). It features the premiere of Hear Me Sing Your Song, a new work with musical collaborators Bryan O'Connell and The Gloaming's Caoimhin O Raghallaigh.

2 With no bells or whistles, Gerard Barrett is becoming the Irish director to watch. This year, he is following his debut feature Pilgrim Hill with Glassland, the story of a taxi driver trying to save his mother from alcoholism. It has its world premiere in Galway (galwayfilm fleadh.com) tonight. Gerard Barrett – remember the name.
