GAY Byrne and Marty Whelan were just some of those at the opening night of Arthur Miller's 1968 play 'The Price' at the Gate Theatre last night.

Robbie Fox, Hugo Hamilton, Nicholas Kearns and Claudia Carroll were also in attendance.

"It is one of Miller's lesser staged plays but a piece of genius nonetheless," Director of The Gate Michael Colgan said.

The production stars Barry McGovern, 'Trainspotting' actress Fiona Bell and Denis Conway.

Tony Award winning director Doug Hughes returns to theatre following on from the success of his 2012 staging of 'Glengarry Glen Ross'.

"Arthur Miller isn't known for his comic sensibility but this play is very funny," Hughes said. "And it's something different."
