Lending a hand on the farm, spending time with grandparents and a lit birthday cake are among the definitions of happiness for the country's aspiring artists.

'Happiness is...' was the theme for this year's Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) art competition, which received 30,000 entries through 300 credit unions.

The winners were announced yesterday at the All Ireland Art Competition Awards and Exhibition at Croke Park.

Marty Whelan joined entrants and their families at the celebrations to acknowledge the varied works of art from children and adults of all ages.

ILCU president Brian McCrory said: "We wholeheartedly support the artistic development of people, young and old, in our communities across the island of Ireland.

"The artists here today should be extremely proud of themselves and the quality of the artwork displayed is truly outstanding."

The judges were: John Walsh, creative director of FOCUS Advertising Agency; Eileen Brophy of UTV Ireland; and artist Ursula Retzlaff O'Connell.
