While she received rave reviews and standing ovations during her stint on stage back in 2009, she turned down the option to feature in the play again.

Cate explained to theatre bosses that it would be impossible to do another run, due to the stress of the role.

She told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "I didn't think I could play her for another three months. I'd lost a lot of weight and my hair was falling out."

The Veronica Guerin star also recalled the difficulty of playing a lead character in Woody Allen's 'Blue Jasmine' film who had fragile mental health.

"Woody kept saying it's not 'Streetcar', but Blanche was clearly a touchstone for me," she said in hindsight.
