Much-loved musical Billy Elliot opens the first show of its six-week stint at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on Tuesday.

Billy Elliot the Musical will run for six weeks from July 26 to September 3, with 80,000 people expected to attend the show.

The musical has never before come to Ireland, despite opening on the West End in 1995 and being seeing by over 11 million people worldwide.

The musical, based on the Oscar nominated film, was described by Time Magazine as the “Best Musical of the Decade” and has won 10 Tony Awards.

Elton John, Lee Hall and Stephen Daldry are the creative team behind the musical.
