The pleasure list: Always all about Abba

One of the most exuberant musicals of all time, seen by more than 54 million people in 39 productions in 14 different languages, Mamma Mia! is the ingenious staging of ABBA's many hits into a coherent dramatic narrative, and can be seen at the Bord Gais Energy theatre from June 23rd to July 4th, with Sara Poyzer as Donna Sheridan, Shobna Gulati as Tanya, Sue Devaney as Rosie and Niamh Perry as Sophie Sheridan. Set on a paradise Greek island, Mamma Mia! tells the story of free-spirited Donna and her daughter Sophie, who is about to be married, and determined to discover which of three men is the father who should give her away.
The brainchild of producer Judy Craymer and featuring all ABBA's best songs - high points include Take A Chance on Me and Chiquitita - worked seamlessly into an enjoyable story, this is, unsurprisingly, one of only five musicals to have run for more than 10 years both on Broadway and in the West End. In 2011, it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People's Republic of China. Not bad going!
