The Fine Gael senator gives details on the loves of her life, from Sushi to a Moscow Mule cocktail, but no mention of Enda Kenny.

The person

Barry Flanagan - we first met at the local election count in 2014 through his friend, Councillor Kieran Binchy, and we've been together for over a year now. It's been great

The memory

A journey by land, from London to Thailand. My friend, Thecla Scully, and I took the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing; then we travelled by train through China. The highlight was renting two motorbikes and biking the length of Vietnam. It was a very exciting - if, at times, terrifying - trip that gave me a newfound appreciation for Irish drivers

The moment of the day

Either first thing in the morning, or last thing at night - depending on the day

The song

Mary Black singing Bright Blue Rose - it cheers me up, and I love to sing it too

The movie

As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt. I love the characters and never get tired of their one-liners and snappy dialogue. It is a sure-fire pick-me-up

The hero

Mahatma Gandhi. He espoused non-violent opposition, and always with a sense of dignity and grace

The book

The Sea by John Banville

The outfit

This changes regularly. It's currently a blue dress and cape by the Irish designer Roisin Linnane. I am a big fan of the Design Centre, and would generally go there when I'm treating myself. They give huge support to Irish designers

The accessory

My pink bobble hat, which has sparkles, and fur on the top - it's so warm, and great for canvassing these days

The gadget

My Fitbit - it counts my steps each day, and there are lots of those when you're running for the General Election. Dublin West is a very large constituency

The pet hate

Meanness. It's a very unattractive characteristic, and often a sign of a mean-spirited personality

The friend

I'm very lucky to have lots of great friends, and I'm slow to single out anyone in particular. However, my school friend Nina Warde and I go back the longest, and she is very dear to me

The beauty product

Eve Lom cleanser - every woman needs a great cleanser, because by the time the make-up comes off at bedtime, I'm generally too tired to be faffing with bad-quality products. My friend Fiona gave it to me as a gift once, and I've used it since

The holiday

A recent trip to Iceland - I couldn't recommend the country more highly. The scenery is amazing once you venture outside of Reykjavik. It's a very cool city - everything is very efficient, people are super nice and we never had a bad morsel of food

The piece of advice

It would be not to take things too personally - you never know what's going on in another person's life, and sometimes people are just having a bad day

The drink

De Bruns in Castleknock village serves a great Moscow Mule; it's a very refreshing cocktail, and puts a pep in your step

The hotel

The Clare Island Lighthouse. My family went there recently for my parents' 40th wedding anniversary, and we had an amazing time

The bar

On a summer evening, I love a glass of wine, sitting on the deck at the Twelfth Lock Hotel in Castleknock Marina. Also, the Cavern wine bar under Baggot Street Wines, owned by Castleknock man, Garret Connolly. The Cavern is a brilliant place, and Baggot Street Wines has just won National Off-Licence Of The Year 2016 at the National Off-Licence Awards. The Cavern is 'bring your own' where you can choose from hundreds of wines upstairs in the off-licence. And the food is fabulous

The hobby

Yoga and Pilates, when I get the time; they're particularly beneficial if I can get to a class in the mornings these days. It's my de-stresser

The part of my body

My eyes . . . like most women!

The celebrity

Bradley Cooper. I saw him recently on The Graham Norton Show and he comes across like he's good crack, and he isn't bad looking either

The virtue

The vice

Freddo bars - they haunt me in every petrol station!

The smell

I suppose smells are often about the memories they conjure . . . sun cream is not bad

The taste

Sushi. I just love it, and it's very healthy!
