RTE Sports broadcaster Michael Lyster has opened up about the controversial remarks made by Joe Brolly last year, in which he said Cavan’s style of football was “as ugly as Marty Morrissey”.

Lyster revealed that Brolly is a “loose cannon” and his comments about Morrissey were unwarranted.

“There’s no doubt about it. What he said about Marty was just so out of line,” said Lyster speaking to 'Eamonn Mallie meets...'.

“It was just so wrong. I do not know, to this day, what Joe was thinking. I really don’t.”

“If you are having a discussion about the match, styles of play, the team, whatever, you can think ‘Well, that’s a bit strong’. People watching the match, they may agree or not.

“This was completely different, this was out of order as I said to Joe on the day,” he said.

Brolly later apologised to Morrissey for the insulting reference, which he publicly accepted.

Meanwhile, Lyster revealed that although Brolly sometimes goes too far, he is a great addition to RTE’s Sunday Game Panel.

“Joe Brolly is a very intelligent guy, very knowledgeable about GAA. When you leave that out, all the madness, what he says is right on the money most of the time.”

“Is he a loose cannon worth having? Yes. If he was a guy that was just a mouth, that would say things just for attention that wouldn’t work.”

'Eamonn Mallie Meets..' airs on Irish TV (SKY 191) on Monday night at 8pm
