VIDEO: Chinese Friends' fan changed his name to Gunther, owns Beijing Central Perk and his flat looks exactly like Chandler and Joeys’
Is this the world’s biggest Friends’ fan?
A Chinese sitcom fan who is obsessed with Friends has mirrored his life on Nineties hit show even going so far as to name his first born child Joey.
The man, who legally changed his name to Gunther, is the owner of Beijing’s Central Perk and has modelled his apartment to be an exact replica of the apartment shared by characters Chandler Bing and Joey Tribbiani in the hit show.
Gunther first discovered Friends when a pal recommended the show as he was going through a bad break-up.
“My first love had just left me. Every day I was almost crying. One of my friends told me ‘You have to watch Friends’,” he said.
“They helped me past the really hard times. I try to persuade more people to watch Friends just like persuading a lot of people to believe in some kind of religion,” he said.
“It’s lucky for this generation to have Friends. Friends is my life.”
Gunther said his marriage is based upon the relationship between Chandler and Monica in the show.
“I try to treat my wife like Chandler treats Monica. I learn a lot from Chandler,” he said.
The fan is also the proud owner of his own Smelly Cat as well as a collection of Baywatch DVDs, a favourite of Chandler and Joey.
Gunther has even gathered a group of mates who mirror the six characters Monica, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, Joey and Chandler in the show.
The group’s Chandler said the reason they love the show so much is because the censorship in China limits what they can watch.
“Chinese television is kind of political. They are trying to teach people what our country wants to know. We just don’t have series like Friends here,” he said.
