A weather presenter has apologised for saying some Haitian children ‘eat trees’ because they are so hungry.
Weather Channel presenter Jennifer Delgado was criticised after suggesting deforestation in the country was partly due to Haitian children who “are so hungry they actually eat the trees”.
One critic of her remarks commented: “Get your facts right before you offend 15 million Haitians.”
The meteorologist apologised for the ‘inappropriate’ comments in a statement posted on Facebook after the footage was shared on social media.
“My intention is always to provide relevant information to areas impacted by severe weather and I wanted to spotlight the incredibly difficult conditions that the people in Haiti continue to face, particularly in light of Hurricane Matthew,” she wrote.
“I deeply regret and apologise for any statement that I used on-air that was offensive.”
In an on-air apology she added: “I know that the deforestation Haiti is due to the cutting down of trees to be used as a source of fuel in the country.
“I sincerely apologise to anyone I may have offended.”
Hurricane Matthew continued its destructive march along the US coast on Saturday as the death toll in Haiti rose to nearly 900.
Before it made landfall, this 'sinister' image of the hurricane was captured from space.
