Channel 4 aired a documentary last night which showed a darker side of the house sharing business and it got a big reaction.
The rise of travel site Airbnb has been well documented over the last number of years.
A travel site which allows people to rent their rooms or homes to complete strangers, the business has proved a huge success as it offers a personable alternative to hotels and hostels for people on their travels.
Last night, however, a Channel 4 documentary spoke with guests and hosts who revealed some of the horror stories they have experienced when renting/letting.
One family returned to find their house had been trashed after the guest they rented their home to threw a huge party.
Another person had a highly valuable print by artist Banksy stolen from their London apartment when renting it using Airbnb. The company then refused to release the address of the thieves until the landlord took to the press to lambast them.
Also, the documentary showed how social housing tenants in London are illegally sub-letting their council flats through Airbnb and the company are refusing to release their details to police.
Most hosts have a lot of praise for Airbnb as it provides an extra income for them, but the documentary showed that the system does have its flaws.
However, many on Twitter accused the show of only focusing on the negative, with many claiming they have had great experiences using the app.
Rent your expensive flat to a 21yo on New Year's Eve and you can't be surprised they have a party surely? #dreamornightmare— penny green (@pennygreen3) September 21, 2016
