Great British Bake Off fans had barely digested the news that the hit show is leaving the BBC for Channel 4 when hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc announced their resignation.

Sue and Mel have fronted the baking competition show since it first aired in 2010, alongside judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood.

The duo announced in a statement that their decision to leave follows the show’s move to Channel 4.

“We’re not going with the dough,” they said in a statement.

With two empty spaces on the show that reached 10.4 million viewers on this year’s opening episode, speculation has been rife about who could fill the slots.

It might not be a duo that replaces Mel and Sue, however, with comedian Jo Brand taking the lead as the favourite to be the new host according to William Hill bookmakers.

Brand currently hosts spin-off show An Extra Slice and is already a firm favourite with viewers.

Former Big Brother host Davina McCall and current Big Brother host Emma Willis have also been mentioned as potential replacements, as has award-winning broadcaster Clare Balding.

Celebrity chef Gino D’Acampo joins the list, as does BBC presenter Claudia Winkleman.
