A student has charted his transgender journey over the course of three years with a daily selfie and the resulting time lapse video is incredible.

YouTube star Jamie Raines (21) started taking testosterone, the hormone that helps transgender men develop a masculine appearance, in 2012.

He told Buzzfeed he had intended to do it for just one year but continued beyond that because changes became more pronounced in the second year, and then the third.

He noticed his nose changing and his face elongating, and after two years facial hair began to appear.

"I was waiting for it once I first started getting a couple of chin hairs," he said.  "It was really exciting."

After three years of testosterone Jamie had achieved a full beard.

He said patience was key in transitioning, as well as having the support of those closest to you.

“It feels like it takes ages for things to start happening but then when it does start everything changes really quickly.

“Patience is your best friend with transitioning and it’s good to surround yourself with a community or friends and family that will support you – either online or in real life," he added.

"Ask questions of people who’ve already gone through it.”

The 21-year-old used 1400 photos to compile the short video of his journey and a TV producer invited him to be part of a new Channel 4 programme, Girls to Men.

Jamie's journey features in the programme which airs on October 13 at 10pm.
