Today FM's Gavan Reilly has been named as TV3's new political correspondent.

The political journalist is making the leap from radio to TV as he joins the 3News team.

As the political correspondent for TodayFM, Gavan was responsible for the station's political and current affairs schedule.

He joined the station in July 2013 and regularly served as a presenter on The Last Word with Matt Cooper and Neil Delamare's Sunday Best.

Gavan has been a regular contributor to TV3's programmes over the years, including Ireland AM and Tonight with Vincent Browne, but now he's making a more permanent move.

Rated as one of the most influential political journalists on Twitter, he's topped the polls of the #murraytweetindex (a ranking of Irish journalists’ influence on the social network) for the past three years in politics.

Gavan will be join the 3News team on September 4.
