From the, "are you well, cos you're looking well?" to the foolproof, "will you shift me mate?", you've probably come across your fair share of pick-up lines over the years.

But tonight's episode of First Dates Ireland (9.30pm on RTE2) may well introduce you to a new one.

A preview from the show reveals a smooth-talking lad request a straw from the waitress, only to use it in a very elaborate pick-up line.

"I'll be honest with you, there's a reason I asked for a straw," he says.

"I'm about to do the cheesiest move ever," he warns his date, while she looks as though she's contemplating her exit strategy.

To put his love-match at ease, he promises her that his move is "going to be magical".

"You see, the law of attraction is if one person creates static by rubbing a straw and so does the other, it should be able to show who the most beautiful girl in the room is," he explains.

The duo then rub their hands together with the straw between them.

"Give it loads," he encourages her, as he rubs vigourously.

"Now when I put this straw on the table, it should be attracted to the most beautiful girl in the room," he tells his slightly terrified looking partner.

And then he blows the straw across the table and it lands straight in front of his date.

"Nailed it," she says with a smile.

To be fair, it's not a bad move.
