'That is not quite the way we look at it' - Dr Ciara Kelly gets real on John Conmy's Operation Transformation failure

Operation Transformation leader John Conmy came in for a reality check from Dr Ciara Kelly on his progress this week.

John, who last week weighed 21 stone 8lbs, failed to meet his weight loss target of 5lbs this week, losing only half of that at 2.5lbs.

Speaking to Ray D'Arcy on his radio show, John said he didn't know why he had failed to hit his target although revealed he couldn't tackle some of his exercise plan.

"I followed the food plan, I was bang on the button, there was no alcohol," he said.

"My training regime was curtailed in half, I couldn’t do the cardio but I did the resistance and, [I was] hugely disappointed when it happened.

However, he added, "You have to accentuate the positives.

"Over two weeks, I am over a stone lighter but I still didn’t make my target this week. So, if I had made my target this week, over the two weeks I had six pounds to lose the first week, five pounds last week, that’s 11 over all, I’ve 14 and a half gone, I am ahead of the curve but I haven’t hit it.”

Unfortunately, Operation Transformation expert Dr Ciara Kelly said she was "not too happy" with John's explanation.

He may be battling an old knee injury which has curtailed his training, but she said weight loss is "80 per cent down to diet".

“That is not quite the way we look at it," she said of John's explanation.

"John had a great weight loss in week one as we would have hoped and would have expected but we set very realistic targets in terms of the target weight losses."

Addressing John directly she continued, “We set you in week one a six pound-seven pound weight loss but we expect you to overshoot it because we want you to do a minimum. We set you a minimum this week of five pounds and we are half that.

"The reality of it is that, there is so many thousands of calories gone out of John’s weekly intake, the weight should still be falling off him at over 21 stone.

"I know your exercise is curtailed because John has torn the cartilage in his knee so he is not able to do the aerobic stuff to the same extent...  but the reality of it is that 80 per cent really of weight loss is down to your diet. You cannot outrun a bad diet.

“It is down to your diet and on the level of calories that we give you... At 21 stone as a man in his 40s, because you are not an old man, you are relatively young.

"At that weight, two and a half pounds. There are other leaders, shall we say, who are younger and lighter who lost more."
