Stars react to Jon Stewart retirement announcement with sadness and shock
Stars have reacted with shock and sadness to the news that Jon Stewart is retiring from The Daily Show.
The host made the shock announcement yesterday, leaving his A-list fans perplexed.
Jon has been at the helm of the Comedy Central programme for 17 years.
“I KNEW WHEN JON STEWART LEFT TO DIRECT THAT MOVIE HE WAS GONNA TRY SOMETHING LIKE THIS (sic),” Mindy Kaling tweeted in outrage.
Alyssa Milano added: “No!!! Jon Stewart can't retire from The Daily Show!! (sic)”
The news also made it across the pond to the UK, where it was met with mixed reactions. For Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, it was a sad day.
“Jon Stewart is leaving @theDailyShow, one of my favourite TV programmes ever. That's major news to get over your morning tea. #BritishGrief (sic),” J.K. wrote on Twitter.
However, fellow TV star Piers Morgan took a slightly more cynical approach. Known for his controversial opinions, the star suggested UK satirist John Oliver, who worked with Jon on the show, was stealing the limelight of late.
“Jon Stewart quitting? Good timing. He was beginning to be eclipsed by John Oliver. This way, he can leave on a high. (sic),” he posted.
His comments were met with outrage, but Piers quickly tried to give things a more sombre tone.
“80+ people were killed by guns in America today. Brian Williams & Jon Stewart are still alive. Perspective, people. Night. (sic),” he wrote.
Jon made his announcement yesterday with a sprinkling of his trademark humour.
“Seventeen years is the longest I’ve ever in my life held a job — by 16 years and five months,” the comedian said in a statement. “In my heart, I know that it is time for someone else to have that opportunity.”
