Simon Cowell on Irish singer Joe McCaul: 'Is there any way you can put that voice in another contestant?'
Former You're A Star winner Joseph McCaul is progressing to the next round of The X Factor.
The 27-year-old from Athlone sang Same Love by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on tonight's episode of the TV3 reality singing series.
And after some choice remarks from the judges, he made it through to the six chair challenge where mentor for his group, the Over 25s Simon Cowell will decide his fate.
"People don't expect what I have to offer," he told the camera before taking to the stage at bootcamp for Simon, Cheryl Fernandez Versini, Rita Ora and Nick Grimshaw.
"I'm not your typical looking popstar, am I?
Ginger hair, glasses, freckles. Kind of an uglier version of Ed Sheeran.
"But I think I've been given a talent, so I'm using it.
"I want that bigger stage. I want Wembley...but my own show."
His performance divided the judging panel, with Simon saying: "Whether you'd like him or not, he can sing."
Nick responded: "I just don't know who is going to be like a massive Joseph McCaul fan.
"Is there any way, like that movie The Fly, you can put that voice into another contestant," Simon retorts.
Rita finishes the discussion by saying: "That's the one thing I don't think you can do.
McCaul previously auditioned for the show four years and represented Ireland at the Eurovision Song Content in 2005.
