RTÉ2's coverage of the Republic of Ireland v Sweden is highest-rating programme of the year.

An average of 1.08 million viewers tuned in to the station's coverage of Ireland's first gameof their Euro 2016 campaign, breaking all previous viewership numbers for the year so far.

The audience peaked at 1.35 million viewers in the last minute of the Group E opener between Ireland and Sweden and RTE2's ntire UEFA EURO 2016 coverage yesterday reached a a cumulative total of 1.93m people.

Last night’s game was the highest-rating television programme of the year to date, as excited fans tuned in to to see Martin O’Neill’s men got their UEFA EURO 2016 campaign underway with a draw in Paris.

RTÉ2’s UEFA EURO 2016 coverage continues this evening with Portugal v Iceland live from Saint-Etienne at 7.00pm followed by highlights of all the day’s action at 10.30pm

The Republic of Ireland’s remaining two group games, against Belgium on Saturday and versus Italy next Wednesday 22 June will be exclusively live on RTÉ2 television, streamed live on RTÉ Player and will have full live commentary on RTÉ Radio 1.
