'Rose of Tralee is best suited to being presented by a man' - Maura Derrane
Maura Derrane has said she believes that The Rose of Tralee is best suited to having a male presenter.
The broadcaster, who co-presents RTE's Today Show with Dáithí O Sé said she has no desire to co-present the televised Rose of Tralee event.
"I still believe that the Rose of Tralee is best suited to being presented by a man," she told RSVP magazine.
"All of the contestants are women and while it may not be a 'beauty pageant', it is still a pageant. Dáithí is ideally suited and I don't think it calls for a female presenter."
O Sé has been hosting the annual festival since 2010 when he took over from Ray D'Arcy.
Maura describes her relationship with Dáithí on the Today Show as "like a television marriage".
"I'd be more like Daithi than I'd be like John [Deasy, husband]" she said. "I'm gregarious and so is Dáithí, but on air Dáithí would be the more outgoing. He is the trickster on air.
"We have very similar backgrounds and we laugh at the same things and that's a good thing. Even when I don't want him to he makes me laugh. I feel almost like I am in back at school with him."
Although the show is on a break for the summer the duo will judge the Listowel races together in September.
