The Fifty Shades of Grey star will play Irish soldier Pat Quinlan from Waterville, Co Kerry.

The movie, titled The Siege of Jadotville, is being made by Netflix and is based on the true story of Irish troops in the Congo during the 1960s.

Dornan, from Hollywood, Co Down, plays Commander Pat Quinlan, who was part of a small group of UN peacekeeping troops who found themselves surrounded by hostile forces in the Congo in 1961.

The soldiers fought 3000 Congolese troops for over a week and only signed a ceasefire deal when they ran out of ammunition.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said: “The story of how Pat Quinlan led his troops against an overwhelming force without losing a single man is one of the great stories of the 20th century, and we are proud to be working with such a talented and committed team to bring it to life.”

"This film will be an amazing addition to our global original films initiative.”

The movie will get its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 9.
