Bray native Laura Whitmore was down to the short-list of contenders to replace Caroline Flack on The X Factor spin-off show.
But producers on Simon Cowell's programme decided that she wasn't the right fit for the role - and instead went for Laura's friend, virtual unknown Sarah-Jane Crawford.
The Radio 1Xtra DJ (29) will be stepping into the shoes vacated by Ms Flack after Cowell was "bowled over" by her in his hunt for a fresh face.
Former model Sarah-Jane said she was "thrilled" to be named as the new host, a role filled by Caroline for the past three years.
Putting on a brave face, laura wrote a message of congrats to her pal on her Twitter page and posted a picture ofthem in bikinis.
"Massive congrats to my pal Sarah Jane on her new TV job! I'll be watching from Oz. Will miss you not out there this year. I need a new cocktail buddy," she said.
The new Xtra Factor host was a guest presenter on the show that Whitmore fronts, 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here Now!'
The news comes as blow to Whitmore, who has been steadily climbing up the TV ranks ever since moving to London.
The fashionista is expected to continue to front ITV's celebrity-led reality show and she is still one of MTV's best-known presenters.
However, she has been looking to land a flagship programme and really establish herself with British viewers.
"The Xtra Factor would have been a brilliant gig for Laura. It would have meant exposure in front of millions of viewers every single weekend and really propelled her into the spotlight," said a source.
"But she's a resourceful girl and has lots of opportunities coming up."
