A mother and daughter paired up for a double date on Channel 4's First Dates and fans of the show had many feelings about it.

Charlotte and Maria were the first mother and daughter duo to appear on the hit dating show.

The pair were sitting at the bar together when they were joined by Maria's date Steve. As Steve kissed Maria on the cheek, Charlotte introduced herself saying: "I'm her daughter by the way."

Steve looked slightly confused as he asked: "What's going on here then?"

Then Charlotte's date showed up, a bodybuilder named Ben - and just seconds after meeting him she she nervously launched into a story about how she shed 13 stone in weight.

"I've got a son. He's three. After I stopped breastfeeding I got really big. I went to 87kg so I went to the gym and started lifting."

She added: "It's really random but I'm here with my mum. She's on a date too."

Looking a little bit shocked, Ben asked: "Do you usually take your mum to first dates? OK, I'm going to have to be on my best behaviour then."

The double date sparked a meltdown on Twitter with fans voicing their opinions on the "cringey" night out.

"I think being on a double date with my mum would actually be hell," said one user.

Another added: "Couldn't go on a date with my mum can barely go to Asda with her."

"What do you do in the first five mins of a date?' Lucy Barton said. "Talk about breastfeeding and tell them you've brought your mum along."

However, not everyone thought the mother-daughter double date was a bad idea with some thinking it made perfect sense: "You'd double date with your best friend so if your mum is like your best friend then why not?"

It looked like the gamble paid off for the mother and daughter duo as it's reported that their double date went on into the wee hours of the night.

Maria has met up with her date Steve four times since their first meeting on the show.
