Idris Elba "would have loved" to host Top Gear.

The 43-year-old actor was tipped as a potential presenter of the BBC motoring programme after Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond departed the show.

However, self-confessed petrolhead Idris admits that while it would have been amazing to take the role, his busy schedule ruled it out.

“I honestly would loved to have done it, but I haven’t got the time if I’m honest,” he told Absolute Radio in a recent interview.

Chris Evans and former Friends star Matt LeBlanc were later revealed as the new hosts of the show, but Chris has stepped down after just one series, leading to speculation that Matt may be left to front the programme alone.

Top Gear sees the presenters compete in various challenges, while mysterious masked driver The Stig sets the standard around the race course.

But in his interview, Idris joked that his own skills behind the wheel would have led to him leaving The Stig red-faced.

"I’m better than the Stig, so what would they do? It would be awkward beating the Stig every week," he joked.

In fact, Idris' claim isn't that far-fetched, considering he broke the land speed world record last year in his Discovery Channel show Idris Elba: No Limits.

It remains to be seen whether or not BBC bosses will announce a replacement for Chris, but it seems unlikely that it will be Idris, considering his extremely packed schedule.

He can currently be seen in Star Trek Beyond as Krall, and is also reprising his role as Heimdall in Thor: Ragnarok, which he is believed to be filming in Australia currently with Tom Hiddleston.

Idris is also working on a movie adaptation of Stephen King's book The Dark Tower.
