Landing a part in Love/Hate has made the careers of many Irish actors and Denise McCormack said she "fought tooth and nail" to nab the role of Linda.

Linda was Fran's wife who had an affair with Nidge. Denise was so determined to land the part that she made her agent arrange a meeting with casting director Maureen Hughes.

"Originally they were looking for a 21-year-old for that part," she said.

"I had a tenuous connection to Tom and I knew if he's that age, she didn't have to be 21. I knew it would work. I got my agent to ring Maureen and ring and ring and finally she said to come in."

Denise went all-out and dressed like Linda, with her "boobs bursting out" for the meeting.

"I went in looking like Linda, the spray tan, hair extensions, the boobs were bursting out," she said.

"I got out of the car and there were lots of builders outside the casting agency and here I was clippedy clop, Linda in the tight, short skirt and high heels.

"I got the part the next day. I knew I'd have to fight and not let go and it's not in my nature to do that but in the industry you have to," she added.

Denise (37) is currently starring in Red Rock on TV3 and is mum to two boys, Harvey and Sydney, with her partner Barry.

"Sydney was just seven months old when I got the job at Red Rock," she told TV Now.

"It's difficult going back to work but I am so lucky in that it's not a five-day week, it's a two or three-day week from seven in the morning to seven in the evening."

Following a stint as Farrah in Fair City, Denise moved to London where she said only a "handful" of actors make it.

"I left Fair City and I moved to London for five years," she said.

"I had an agent over there and it's really tough - only a handful will make it.

"I moved back here, met Barry, did a couple of things but nothing really substantial and then Love/Hate came along and changed everything."
