Singer songwriter and former Oasis member Noel Gallagher has paid tribute to the late British actress Caroline Aherne.

Noel, whose song "Half the World Away was the theme tune for Caroline's comedy creation Royle Family, wrote a tribute to the comedienne on his Instagram account today.

"RIP Kaz... I shall sing for you tonight. (My god you made us laugh!)," he wrote.

Gallagher, who was a fan of the cult classic, was reportedly mystified when he was first approached for permission to use "Half the World Away" as the theme tune.

He was reportedly on tour at the time, and due to a bad phone line, he thought that Britain's Royal Family were asking for permission to use the song for a documentary.

Caroline and Noel were later pictured partying together in the 90s.
