An Operation Transformation leader has told of her shock after she discovered one morning her teenage son had passed away overnight.
Clare Scanlan (39) said she was 'great buddies' with her son Darra who died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome four years ago.
The proud mum spoke about the tragic experience in an extremely emotional 'Circle of Truth' on tonight's RTE show.
“I got up to wake him for school and he had died in his sleep of Sudden Adult Death. There’s bits of me still there," she said.
"I had him when I was only 19 so we were great buddies and I suppose he was everything.
"The impact of that, no-one gives you a manual for it or no-one can understand it unless it has happened to them.
"I do what I need to do for Tom and Liam and Caoimhe [her family] and they are not without but I don’t know, I am just not me anymore”.
The mum-of-two told the show how she keeps going for her children, but feels she is stuck in a rut with her weight creeping up all the time. The working mum is from West Cork but is living in Monagea, Limerick with husband Tom and their children Liam (11) and Caoimhe (10).
Clare said her biggest downfall in the programme will be chocolate and biscuits with her cup of tea.
She said she hopes that tackling her weight will be the first step in learning to feel happy and start enjoying life again.
