HBO has confirmed that Deadwood star Ian McShane and Max von Sydow, best known for The Exorcist, will be joining Game of Thrones.

Variety reports that von Sydow has been confirmed for the role of the Three-Eyed Raven, which was originated by Struan Rodger in the season four finale.

It has not been confirmed, however, which character McShane will play although it is suspected he will play one of two possible roles.

Game of Thrones fan site Watchers on the Wall included two new character descriptions for the upcoming season earlier this year, the first of which is a pirate in his 40s to late 50 and is believed to be Euron 'Crow's Eye' Greyjoy, the uncle of Theon Greyjoy, who is played by Alfie Allen.

The other possibility is a character believed to be Randyll Tarly, the father of Samwell Tarly who is a little older than Euron.

It is believed the characters will not have a huge amount of screentime in season six but will become more prominent thereafter.

HBO boss Michael Lombardo last week told reporters that Game of Thrones will continue to eight seasons, and possibly beyond.
