Fair City's Tommy plays Rory McIlroy's dad in new Nike ad
Fair City actor Geoff Minogue is best known for playing one-time stalker Tommy Dillon but he has an altogether more cuddly role in the latest Nike ad.
Minogue was cast as Rory McIlroy's father Gerry in the ad which charts Rory's rise from a golf-obsessed youngster who idolised Tiger Woods, to facing off against his idol as an adult on the green.
"I suppose the old grey hair helped and the fact I play golf in single figures," the actor told The Irish Daily Star.
"I play off 8 so that became part of the audition process as there were a couple of scenes set up whereby the father had to coach him.
"I had a couple of clubs in my car so I grabbed them for the for the audition and got the swing on camera so it was an option for them."
The ad was filmed in January at Holywood Golf Club where the young McIlroy played and Rory's uncle Brian was on set during filming.
Rory and Gerry were in Abu Dhabi at the time of filming.
Meanwhile, Dublin schoolboy Charlie Quinn became Rory McIlroy's unofficial double after landing the role of the 10-year-old Rory.
The advert will be broadcast on Sky Sports, ESPN and the Golfing Channel throughout the Masters this weekend.
