Downton Abbey series five official trailer released
The official trailer has been released by ITV for season five of hit period drama Downton Abbey.
Two new guest stars will feature in the show; Anna Chanvellor as Lady Anstruther and a dapper Richard E Grant as the charming art historian Simon Bricker.
They will join a host of familiar faces including Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Hugh Bonneville, Joanne Froggatt, Elizabeth McGovern, Rob James-Collier, Brendan Coyle, Laura Carmichael, Allen Leech, Lily James, Sophie McShera and Tom Cullen.
It opens in 1924 and, in the opening scenes, the Earl of Grantham addresses the election of Britain's first Labour government and the appointment of Ramsay McDonald as prime minister.
“This government,” he warns, “is committed to the destruction of people like us and everything we stand for.”
Downton Abbey is set to go up in smoke in the first episode, when a heartbroken Lady Edith Crawley accidentally sets fire to her bedroom.
Lady Edith, played by Laura Carmichael, is in bed weeping over her secret daughter, who she had to give up when her lover, Michael Gregson, mysteriously disappeared, but a book too close to the fireplace goes up in flames, putting the rest of the house and its inhabitants in danger.
Fans will see the family and servants scramble to get out in time and to save Downton, uncovering some house secrets along the way.
The new season of Downton Abbey will broadcast on ITV on Sunday September 21 at 9pm.
