Did RTE turn down Daniel and Majella O'Donnell's UTV ratings hit?
Daniel and Majella O'Donnell's popular new UTV Ireland show is set to hit American screens.
The hit show, which sees the country crooner and his wife of 13 years hit the road around Ireland to visit a series of bed and breakfasts has proved a ratings winner for struggling UTV.
But, according to reports, not everyone thought it would be such a success. An RTE insider said they had "brief talks" about broadcasting the show, but it was quickly snatched up by UTV.
It averages 322,000 viewers during its Monday night airing in the Republic of Ireland and 204,000 in Northern Ireland.
It's now set for an international audience as US public broadcaster PBS have purchased the rights to air the show.
Philip Kampff, Managing Director of Vision Independent Productions, which produces the show, said they are thrilled with its success.
"We knew it would be popular, but people of all age have really embraced it," he told the Irish Mail on Sunday.
"The programme came about when Daniel's manager had come to me saying that Daniel and Majella were keen to do something together and they wanted to do it in Ireland.
"We put our heads together and came up with two ideas. Daniel and Majella were in Tenerife at the time and we sent them both ideas and they immediately came back and said the B&B one."
Daniel is fresh from a turn on Strictly Come Dancing and is currently in Tenerife soaking up the sun and celebrating his wedding anniversary.
