The American born, Irish based tv star appeared on The Late Late Show last night and opened up about his long-distance relationship with his Chinese girlfriend.

Des moved briefly to China in 2013 to learn the language and build a comedy career.

"I have a Chinese girlfriend but it's tough," he told host Ryan Tubridy.

"It's good, but it's tough. I'm 40 next week. She's 25.  I'm in a bit more of a rush to be married. I'm not saying it's not going to work out, but a lot of stars have to align for it to work out."

"She came to Ireland and I was supposed to go next week but I have to go back to New York instead," he later added.

Bishop, who is currently working on a pilot, enjoyed making Tubridy and the audience squirm when he shared a tidbit about his dating life, only to reveal after it was just a joke.

"I'm 40, I'm not married, a lot of people are saying to me, 'Des, come on what's the problem?," he said.

"I'm not sure what it is but I think I have a problem with intimacy. For example, I think about other women during sex. I have a chronic problem - I think about ex-girlfriends when I'm with my current girlfriend.

"That's a problem because when I'm thinking about a woman, when I was with them, I wasn't thinking about them.

"So, a few years ago, I was in a relationship with a girl who had done a lot of therapy so one day she confronted me in the middle of if (we're talking about sex on The Late Late),

"She said 'I can tell you're thinking about someone else' and I just said 'Relax, your time will come'.

"That is just a joke - I feel I owed you one at least," he laughed.

His mother Eileen is battling lung cancer and suffered from complications afterwards and he has been splitting his time between Ireland an New York to care for her.
