Brendan Grace has reflected on the traumatic accident that left his daughter Melanie with a broken back and legs.
In this week's episode of Livin' With Lucy, the legendary comedian opened up about his daughter's accident that left him and his wife Eileen wondering whether Melanie would ever walk again.
“We’ve had our ups and downs but definitely the most traumatic thing was the accident in 1999," he told Lucy Kennedy on the TV3 show.
"I had just left Ireland I got out of JFK at the time and Brian, my roadie, my manager, my PA, my everything, said: ‘There’s been a bad accident and Melanie and Frank [Melanie's husband] have been involved.' I had to sit down. I started to get palpitations."
“The one thing that kept me and Eileen from total panic was the fact that Melanie spoke to me. She must have said to whoever was in the emergency room, ‘I need to speak to my dad’ and feebly, I could hear her voice on the other end of the phone saying ‘don’t worry dad.'"
While Melanie recovered from the accident, the realisation that it could have been much worse isn't lost on Brendan.
“It was a head on collision with a truck and she was sitting on her hunkers in the front of the car. She had her seat belt on. If her legs had been down she would have been mangled.”
Living with Lucy: Brendan Grace airs on Tuesday 8th November at 9.30pm on TV3.
