Beverley Callard has been signed off work on Coronation Street for two months.

The 59-year-old actress, who plays Liz McDonald in the ITV soap, has been open about her struggles with depression in the past.

And after the regular medication she takes for the illness was discontinued without warning, Beverley was reportedly ordered to go home by bosses 10 days ago.

"Beverley has been taking different medications for the last two years then suddenly one was discontinued," a source told Britain's The Sun newspaper.

"It affected her mental health and affected her at work. It was a surprise to people that she was suddenly quite ill again.

"She’s hoping an alternative can be found and wants to return to work as soon as she is better.

As her co-stars filmed the funeral of Tony Stewart, played by Terence Maynard, on Wednesday, Beverley was noticeably absent.

She has apparently been struggling to cope following the death of her friend and co-star Anne Kirkbride, who died last year aged 60 following a battle with cancer.

"Everyone loves Beverley and hopes she’ll bounce back from this," the source added. "She’s still traumatised at losing her best friend. It’s just over a year since Anne died and she misses her like crazy."

This is not the first time Beverley's depression has caused her problems. She was forced to take five months off her work at Coronation Street in 2009 after she had to check into renowned clinic The Priory to seek treatment for her depression.

Speaking about her battle with the illness last year, Beverley explained: “I knew I wasn’t myself and wasn’t firing on all cylinders.

“I just didn’t think anyone like me would have depression because I’m a strong, feisty female."

A Coronation Street spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by The Sun.
